The way you describe these movies is poetry in itself. I felt immersed the whole time, and partly because of the title -- 'films that romanticise everyday life'. I was forced to stop, pause, and read this article knowing that I might not discover any hidden meanings or huge revelations, but more reflect on the raw beauty of daily life.
I think (myself included) people should make it a priority to watch more films like this. We discussed this months ago, but I remember saying I search (frantically) for hidden meanings in films, and how that's not always a fulfilling mindset to go into a movie with and can defeat the 'purpose' of the movie entirely. If only we had permission to just 'be' in the movie. Aha! You've created a list that does this! (thank you).
Yes, we watch movies to feel the extreme high and low emotions -- through edge-of-your-seat action, passionate romance, heartbreaking tragedy and belly laughing comedy -- we can escape to a different world for a while. But that somewhat creates an unrealistic standard of what life is really like (a hyperreality). It feeds human nature, which is to crave stimulation, novelty and purpose, rather than just existing in the mundane. I’m not generalising why people are experiencing a lot more depression/ anxiety than they once were, but I think what we see in the media (films that are the opposite of mundane, idealised Instagram influencer lives etc etc) creates unrealistic expectations of reality -- and I think that’s something that has a lot to answer for.
So you've not only gone and given people a beautiful list of films to watch; but you've given them a reminder to stop -- look up at how blue/grey/purple/orange/black the sky is -- smell the flowers -- appreciate the first sip of their warm cup of coffee -- and just take a beat. (I'm screaming at how cliche that sounds but I feel strongly about this LOL).
Thank you for this post, haven’t seen all of these yet, so I’ll have to watch them…but this is the Naturalist type of cinema I’m drawn to these days as well and it’s a style that my film “Unclaimed” is as well. ❤️
I just sat and watched Paterson. I remember attempting it back in 2016 shortly after it came out. I couldn't get into it. I found Driver's performance lethargic then, but this time around the film really resonated. The performance really centered it for me, looking forward to seeing the rest on the list.
I adore Perfect Days! Great list, I have a lot to check out!
I hope you’ll love the others. Our Little Sister is so great.
